Introduction

The companies that make up the Nike Group may be diverse, in both location and business interests, but they do have something in common - they are all actively involved in the communities in which they are situated.
Whether it be charity work, caring for the environment, or community support, the companies and their staff strive to give something back to the local area.

The Nike Group in the community continued

Here are some examples of what the Nike Group as a whole does for the community:

In 2000 the Nike Group regeneration at Amen Corner in Binfield was awarded a Tidy Britain Group Millennium Marque Award in recognition of environmental excellence;

The Nike Group is a founder member of the Berkshire Community Foundation that considers applications for funding from local community and charity groups;

As a Gold Shield Project Sponsor of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the Nike Group helps the development of many young people;

The Group is a major sponsor of the Rhos y Ghalian Outdoor Education Centre in Wales. Run by a non-profit making organisation, this centre is predominantly for the use of school children and young people from Berkshire and the surrounding counties. It is also occasionally used for leadership and business courses;

In recognition of a Nike Group contribution to Reading University for the new Agricultural building, a lecture theatre has been named after John Nike;

The Age Concern Big Band Concert; held every year at Bracknell's Wilde Theatre, is sponsored by the Nike Group;

An annual CARE (Community Action for the Retired and Elderly) event is held at the Coppid Beech Hotel each year on the first Monday in December. Three hundred elderly Bracknell Forest Residents are invited to the Hotel and are entertained for the day. CBH work in conjunction with Thames Valley Police and Age Concern. The theme of the day is Crime Prevention and Safety in the home and in amongst the Bingo, Choir, Raffle and Lunch the police do give a talk about bogus callers.

Ice skating vouchers are constantly being sent to local schools by all JNLL centres as prizes for raffles and fetes;

Ice skating for the members of the Bracknell Ice Skating Club, and the Junior Ice Hockey development teams is heavily subsidised; and

John Nike himself has raised thousands of pounds for charity by running in three London Marathons and taking part in other fund raising activities over the past few years.
